NEW YORK, HOUSTON, LOS ANGELES - The Azerbaijani-American Council  (AAC) expresses its indignation over the recent sentencing of youth activists, Adnan Hajizade and Emin Abdullayev (Milli), by the Azerbaijani court.

On November 11, 2009, the Sabail district court of Baku convicted Hajizade,  a graduate of the University of Richmond and a founder of the OL! Youth movement, and Milli, a co-founder of the Alumni Network, of hooliganism and inflicting minor bodily harm, sentencing them for 2 years and 2.5 years, respectively[1]. On July 8, 2009, both activists were reported to come under a physical attack, sustaining injuries[2], while dining at a restaurant in Baku[3].  Upon filing their complaint with the police, they were detained on charges of hooliganism under the article 222.1 of the criminal code[3].

KARABAKH PEACE PROCESS MUST BE FULLY INCLUSIVE

Javid Huseynov

The dispute over the Azerbaijani region of Nagorno-Karabakh has festered for more than two decades. One of the keys to finding a peaceful resolution of the conflict is achieving the normalization of relations between the region's ethnic Armenian and Azeri communities.

In 1992, a mission of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE, precursor to the OSCE) headed by then-U.S. Secretary of State James Baker worked out the so-called Baker Rules, which were agreed to by all sides in the conflict. Those rules recognized the two communities of Nagorno-Karabakh as "interested parties," and Armenia and Azerbaijan as "principal parties."

THE JOINT LETTER OF AZERBAIJANI- AND TURKISH-AMERICAN ORGANIZATIONS TO PRESIDENT OBAMA REGARDING THE NAGORNO-KARABAKH CONFLICT

President Barack Obama

The White House

1600 Pennsylvania Ave., NW

Washington, D.C. 20500

August 4, 2009

Dear President Obama,

Last year’s war between Georgia and Russia punctuated the continued threat to peace and security in the South Caucasus arising from unresolved territorial conflicts that have spanned more than two decades since the fall of the Soviet Union.  Recently, several Iranian officials openly threatened Azerbaijan for hosting Israeli President Shimon Peres in Baku.  Similarly, four UN Security Council resolutions demanding that Armenian forces withdraw and cease the occupation of Azerbaijani lands since 1993 have achieved little for the displaced one million refugees and IDPs.  All of this adds to the urgency of reaching a sustainable peace based on the fundamentals of international law and human rights, or, as you have stated earlier, “a lasting and durable settlement of the Nagorno-Karabagh conflict.”

If the protocols go into force, would the unconditional opening of Turkish-Armenian border help to peacefully resolve the Karabakh conflict?

If the protocols go into force, will the Armenian community cease its campaign of genocide claims against Turkey or relinquish the territorial claims to Eastern Anatolia?
